The dog days of summer are upon us but the fishing has not slowed down. Getting out early before the mid-day heat wave makes a world of difference. With multiple large corporate groups and family groups this August we had to bump and move a lot to stay on fish. Early in the morning you could find a good redfish and speckled trout bite in fairly shallow waters of 3 to 5 feet. As the day progressed and that Louisiana heat set in, knowing when to transition to deeper water and channels with moving water made the difference. The Campo's live shimp did the trick on most days, however we did find some really good early speckled trout bites on Marker 54 plastics and Matrix Shad during the first hour or 2 of fishing. After transitioning to deeper water, bouncing live shrimp off the bottom along deeper oyster reefs and shallow water rigs produced consistent bites on trout, sheepshead, redfish, and black drum. Right now the days are long and hot, but if you are willing to get out early, fishing is still great even in the Louisiana heat!
