The fishing in July has not let up. Typically when the weather gets real hot, the fishing slows down a little, but not this year! The big trout are still out in full force. With a lot of light wind days we were able to get out into Breton Sound quite a bit throughout the month. We were able to locate some big schools of hammer trout ranging from 18" to 22" with the occasional 25"-26" trout. We were able to stay on big trout for for most of July due to calm winds allowing us to go out further into the Gulf. Finding trout on sandbars in 4 to 8 foot of water and catching on live shrimp along with the Marker 54 glide and jerk shrimp kept them hitting the deck of the boat. The key to success was finding clean water with good moving tide. Usually the trout bite only last for the first few hours of the morning in July, and when the sun gets up the fish move to deeper water. However, we have been catching trout all the way up to noon even during the hottest part of the day. The speckled trout are big and plentiful right now. The bite would come in waves, literally. If you remain patient and could handle the heat, you were catching big quality trout and filling the ice box up with them. Once the trout transitioned off the islands and sandbars you could chase them down on deeper water satellite rigs in 18 to 20 foot of water Carolina rigging live shrimp or live croaker on the bottom. The early bite is fast and furious and working a top water lure early on smooth water was offering up some exciting top water action for speckled trout and bull reds.
In addition to the trout bite remaining strong, the bull reds have been crazy. We caught quite a few bull reds measuring well over 50" in July. During our offshore snapper trips, the bite was still strong but the sharks have taken over. At least 50% of our catch was getting eaten by the TAX man before we could get them the boat. We were still able to get our snapper limits throughout July with the exception of 1 day but we had to work hard for them due to the crazy number of sharks in the Gulf right now.
Although the weather is hot right now, getting out early and jumping on them quick has made for some excellent fishing. Our books are starting to fill up for the fall run in September and October. Give us a call to book your next fishing adventure with the Hook Dat Fishing Charters team.
