The weather was HOT in August. Temps in the upper 90's and 100's with heat index soaring above 110 degrees made for some difficult fishing conditions. But for those who braved the heat and were willing to get an early start, the redfish bite was also HOT! We did have some decent days chasing trout in deeper water, 15 - 20 feet working matrix shad, vudu shrimp, and live shrimp off the bottom. However, the trout bite was a sporadic. We had to hit the trout hard from first light for about the first hour. After the sun got up, the trout were just not feeding. We focused a lot of our effort after the first hour trout bite on redfish.
The redfish were still on point throughout August. Moving out of the shallows into 3 - 5 foot of water produced a lot of redfish limits. The trick was to get out of the shallows and work near or in deeper water with good tide lines. Most reds were caught using live shrimp under popping cork.
Red Snapper season was still open during the month of August and we had very good success catching limits of snapper bottom jigging and using cut pogies for bait. Again the sharks were everywhere and we had to stick and move a lot to get away from the sharks.
Fall is almost upon us and we are looking forward to a productive speckled trout and redfish season this fall. We can't wait for some cooler temperatures.
